On this day in 2004: Wayne Rooney joins Manchester Utd from boyhood club Everton. The fee reported is £25.6m and a world record fee for a teenager.
Wayne had been Everton’s second youngest first-team player, making his league debut against Spurs aged 16 years and 10 months. Moreover, he had become England’s youngest international when he made his debut against Australia aged 17 years 111 days.
He made his debut for Manchester United in 2004 against Turkish side Fenerbache; and bagged himself a hat-trick. Not a bad way to announce himself to the Old Trafford faithful.
Rooney went on to make 559 appearances for Utd, scoring 253 goals along the way to become the clubs record goal-scorer. Wayne divides opinion but for me, there is no doubting his status as an Old Trafford legend.
